Bunions: What Causes Them & How To Treat Them

Bunions are one of the most common problems a podiatrist can treat. They look like a bony bump on the side of your big toe. Small bunions may not cause any pain, however, large bunions can make it difficult to wear shoes and walk comfortably.

Causes of Bunions

Bunions are caused by a bone deformity in your foot that causes the big toe joint to protrude outward. The joint can rub on the inside of your shoe, causing friction, irritation, and eventually, bunion formation.

Risk Factors for Bunions

Women are more at risk of developing bunions due to wearing narrow, pointed-toe shoes. Narrow shoes crush your toes together. High heels make bunions more likely because they force your toes forward.

Prevention and Home Care for Bunions

You can do a lot to prevent bunion formation if you wear shoes with plenty of room for your toes. If you form a small bunion, you may be able to get relief if you:

  • Place ice packs on the bunion to reduce swelling

  • Wear inserts or padding to cushion the bunion

  • Tape the bunion to add support and stability

  • Take over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medication

  • Change to wider, more supportive shoes

Professional Treatment for Large, Painful Bunions

Your podiatrist can help you get relief from larger bunions, starting with x-rays to determine the extent of bone involvement. Your podiatrist may recommend:

  • Custom-fit orthotics and footwear

  • Corticosteroid injections around the bunion

  • Prescription-strength anti-inflammatory medications

When You Might Need Bunion Surgery

Bunion surgery, known as a bunionectomy is a common surgery to remove bunions and realign the bones in your foot. You might need bunion surgery if you experience:

  • Severe foot pain which limits walking or wearing shoes

  • Chronic inflammation and swelling of your big toe

  • Bone deformity and stiffness in your big toe

Types of Bunion Surgery

Bunion surgery, known as a bunionectomy, can be performed in several ways, including:

  • Fusing your big toe joint

  • Surgically straightening your big toe

  • Removing soft tissue or bone
